The Long Way Home

Four ways to travel, none of them sensible

A family of four riding one motorcycle through mist, rendered with glitched colour
A striped beach parasol over a table of bottles by the sea, lettered Sunny

It began at the drinks stall on the last hot afternoon of the holiday.

“We should start back,” said Ma. Nobody moved.

Small brown sailing boats mirrored above and below a green sea band, with white mountains

The boat left at four, and the sea did that thing it does

where the mountains come out twice, once up and once down.

Two pale sharks with open jaws against an orange sky and dark blue sea

Halfway across, two shapes came up alongside.

They had a great many teeth and no particular plan.

Many blue shark heads with white teeth among wave lines, lettered TEAM

Then their friends arrived, which is the trouble with sharks.

They travel as a team. They are very proud of this.

Three rockets lettered Victory climbing through pale cloud and orange flame

So we left the boat and took the rockets instead. There were three.

They were called Victory, all of them, which made the tickets confusing.

Three rockets rising through tan cloud with the word Victory in red outline

Up past the weather. Up past the last of the light.

Pa said he could see our house. He could not see our house.

A six-pointed star of brown and violet feathered strokes on cream

We came down through a star, which is not allowed,

and is the best thing I have ever done.

The striped parasol and drinks table under a bright sun by a green shore

And landed, of course, back at the drinks stall.

“One more afternoon,” said Ma. Nobody argued.
